Now, I haven’t read The Blacktongue Thief yet, but the hype for She Who Became the Sun is real and well-deserved. Both of these books have been received praises from many people for the past few months, and with these kinds of huge praises and buzz, there’s the tendency for them to disappoint. If you’re active on bookish social media, you should know that She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan is one of the two most hyped books published by Tor Books this year the other one being The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. She Who Became the Sun has the bravery to pitch itself as The Song of Achilles meets Mulan and actually live up to it. Meanwhile, he says, if you're the kind of animal that gets hunted, "you're very likely to have a horizontal pupil" and to have your eyes on the side of your head. In general, round pupils seem to be common in taller hunters that actively chase down their prey, says Banks. "So for example foxes, in the dog lineage, have vertical pupils, but wolves have round pupils," he says.Īnd while a small pet cat has vertical slits, Sprague says, "the larger predators, like lions and tigers, have round pupils." Some frogs have heart-shaped pupils, while geckos have pupils that look like pinholes arranged in a vertical line. "There are some weird ones out there," says Martin Banks, a vision scientist at the University of California, Berkeley.Ĭuttlefish have pupils that look like the letter "W," and dolphins have pupils shaped like crescents. The pupil is the hole that lets light in, and it comes in lots of different shapes. The shape of the animal's pupil, it turns out, is closely related to the animal's size and whether it's a predator or prey. Scientists have now done the first comprehensive study of these three kinds of pupils. And the eyes of other animals, like goats and horses, have slits that are horizontal. But a tiger has round pupils - like humans do. Take a close look at a house cat's eyes and you'll see pupils that look like vertical slits. Bottom row, from left: domestic cat, horse, gecko. Can you guess which eyes belong to what animal? Top row, from left: cuttlefish, lion, goat. But it has been done a few times in the history of the novel. The moment you’ve got fantasy and a novel that is also asking you to take seriously what you want to say about a conflict in which many tens of thousands of real lives were lost and more lives were therefore smashed and shattered and which is still continuing into this week’s newspapers in the form of ISIS, then it’s tough to do that. Is there a reason that you wanted to approach these simultaneously? Do you feel like that’s just curiosity on your part to approach them in one novel or did you feel like they spoke to each other in a special way?Ĭuriosity sounds good. The Bone Clocks does have this dual focus between the fantasy adventure and also global warming and the war in Iraq, these real-world crises. Mary returned to Madame Talvande’s school in the fall of 1837, but following the death of her father in March 1838, she accompanied her mother back to Mississippi to settle financial affairs there. She wrote in her diary that Mississippi was where, “I received…my first ideas that negroes were not a divine institution for our benefit-or we for theirs.” Mary later viewed the Mississippi journey as an adventure that altered her attitudes toward Indians, slaves, and whites. The change from the cosmopolitan life of Charleston to the Mississippi frontier was drastic. Not because the story is inherently boring, and not because I’ve been desensitized to small, intimate stories because of how flashy fiction has become in the last few decades (please don’t send Martin Scorsese after me). While reading it, the story was one of the most boring stories I’d read in a long time. His story is one of the best examples of the resilience of the human spirit in English literature, and yet… Santiago has every reason to give up on his quest, but he doesn’t. My favorite thing about this story has to be pure, raw determination of the protagonist. Determined to break his curse, Santiago takes his skiff out to sea to prove to himself and his community that his bad luck days are over. Even the father of his young companion, Manolin, is forbidden to hang around him anymore for fear his luck will rub off on him. It has been eighty-four days since he has caught a fish. The Old Man and the Sea follows Santiago, a fisherman in Cuba with the world’s worst luck.
